Camden Public Library: Introduction to Permaculture March 13th

Camden Public Library: Introduction to Permaculture March 13th

Camden, ME - Jesse Watson of Midcoast Permaculture Design will give a talk and slideshow introducing the concept of permaculture design at the Camden Public Library on Tuesday evening, March 13, at 6:30 pm. Permaculture is a design system and set of techniques for creating resilient human habitats and healthy ecosystems. It is modeled on ecological principles and covers a wide range of design areas including food production, shelter, energy, water, wellness, community, culture and economics. Permaculture, in a concrete sense, is a form of landscape design and is useful to everyone from home gardeners to city planners. It is also a practice of land stewardship and much more. “We will talk about some of the ethics, principles, strategies, and techniques,” said Watson. “We will discuss the importance and potential of permaculture’s design-based solutions in today’s world of economic, energy and environmental uncertainties.”

When asked to define “permaculture,” Watson explained, “The easiest way to frame permaculture is actually in terms of landscape design.  But it is primarily a system of ecological design or, put differently, a design method or process; and as such can be applied to other facets of society including food, energy, building, economics and culture.  It is a big, abstract idea and I try to clear up some of these distinctions in the presentation by talking about some of the design principles. But I also try and emphasize how concrete the idea is by using illustrations from landscape design and various gardening techniques.”
The talk is part of the “Angles on the Environment” series the Camden library is hosting throughout the month of March.
