Entertainment: Strings & Reeds Performs Rock City Cafe Tonight March 17th

Rockland, ME - At Rock City Cafe tonight Strings & Reeds will be performing from 7pm to 9pm. The public is invited to come, and listen to their music. Rock City Cafe is located at 316 Main Street in Rockland, ME.

Traditional Irish duo Strings & Reeds will appear in concert tonight at Rock City Café  in Rockland, ME. The band is a duo of local traditional musicians, Nick Apollonio and Susanne Ward. Playing a mix of mostly Irish music, Nick and Susanne will entertain you with jigs, reels, hornpipes, slow airs and songs while you enjoy dinner and beverages at the café.

Rockport resident Nick Apollonio has been making and playing stringed instruments now for 50 years. Along the way, he has played in several bands, notably Different Shoes and Any Monday. An accomplished guitarist, his discovery of Irish music in 1970 inspired him to pick up the fiddle. But his real love is the ten-string cittern, a hybrid of guitar and mandolin. His latest CD, Cittern on the Dock, is a recording of all cittern tunes, some original and some traditional. He is accompanied by stellar local musicians on flute, harp, drum and uilleann pipes.

Rockland resident Susanne Ward Rockland comes from a musical family and grew up playing the piano. In the early 90’s, she decided to learn how to play the Irish uilleann pipes, a complex bellows-blown bagpipe. After 20 years, she finally is beginning understand the instrument. She recently began playing the concertina, fantasizing for something slightly less complicated. Since moving to Maine 21 years ago, Susanne has played with the traditional Irish band Feckless and also with A Pint of Plain.
