Rockland, ME - To celebrate the release of the film adaptation of the novel this month, Oceanside High School East and YouthLinks have joined forces to host a community read, made possible with a Community Outreach grant from the Maine Humanities Council and a generous donation from Walmart. Oceanside East students in grades ten through twelve have volunteered to read the book together, play games, participate in challenges, and find out firsthand just what the Hunger Games hype is all about.
As part of the month-long celebration, Oceanside, YouthLinks, and Community Read participants will be conducting a Hunger Games food drive to benefit local food pantries. Those wishing to donate food or other items – including soap, shampoo, toothpaste, or diapers – can drop them in boxes at the Rockland Public Library or Oceanside East High School’s front lobby.
Community members of all ages – both those who have read the book already and those who have been meaning to but just haven’t gotten around to it yet – are encouraged to participate. Monday evenings at 6:30, adults and teens alike are invited to the Rockland Public Library Community Room to enjoy light refreshments while we discuss the book, have writing and art challenges, and compete for prizes. The weekly sessions will be hosted by Oceanside East’s very own Mary Ann Giasson and Jen Blood, local author of All the Blue-Eyed Angels and the Hyperink Press Hunger Games Quicklet & Study Guide.
The month-long community read will culminate on Monday, April 2nd in the Rockland Public Library Community Room, with a Victor’s Celebration that will include games, refreshments, discussions, and prizes revolving around The Hunger Games. For more information or to find out how you can participate in The Hunger Games community read, contact Oceanside East’s Becky Harjula or Mary Ann Giasson at 596-2010, or Jen Blood at jen@jenblood.com.
