Sappelt blasts a solo-homer, 'Dogs beat Bowie, 4-3 in 11 innings

Bowie, Maryland - Dave Sappelt snapped a 3-3 tie with one-out in the 11th inning, giving the Sea Dogs (25-37) a 4-3, 11-inning win over the Bowie Baysox (33-28) on Saturday night at Prince George's Stadium in front of 7,289 fans.

Madison Younginer (2-2) worked the final 2.2 innings on 2 hits to earn the win. Younginer entered the game with a 3-1 lead in the ninth, but Bowie tied the game. Glynn Davis singled to plate Quincy Latimore, but a bobble in LF by Jonathan Roof, enabled Jason Esposito to score the tying run.

Gene Escatt (1-2) allowed the solo homer, and took the loss for the Baysox, giving up three hits and one run.

Both starters were dominant, as former Sea Dog Joe Gunkel hurled seven scoreless on five hits. Gunkel fired 13 scoreless over two starts for Bowie against Portland. William Cuevas pitched six scoreless on four hits, no walks and fanned eight.

Bowie broke the ice in the seventh inning, scoring an unearned run off Robby Scott (1.1 IP, 3 H, R, 0 ER, SO). With one out, David Freitas singles and advanced to third base on Sappelt's error in center. Garabez Rosa delivered a sac-fly to right field.

The Sea Dogs responded in the eighth inning, as Marco Hernandez (4-for-5, 2 RBI, 3 doubles and a walk) delivered a two-run double off Mychal Givens, giving Portland a 2-1 lead. The 'Dogs took a 3-1 lead in the ninth on Roof's tow-out RBI single to right. Givens gave up a season-high 3 runs on four hits over 2 IP.

The Sea Dogs and Bowie Baysox (Orioles affiliate) close out their three-game series this afternoon beginning at 2:05 PM from Prince George's Stadium. Justin Haley (1-8, 6.04) makes his 12th start of the season for Portland. Former Sea Dog Terry Doyle (5-1, 2.61) gets the call for Bowie.
