Red Sox 12th Ranked Prospect Joins Sea Dogs
Portland, Maine - The Boston Red Sox have promoted first baseman Sam Travis to the Portland Sea Dogs from High-A Salem. Travis will make his Double-A debut tonight (Thursday, June 25th) at New Hampshire against the Fisher Cats. To make room for Travis, INF David Chester was placed on the disabled list.
Travis, 21, was selected by the Red Sox in the second round (67th overall) of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Indiana University. In 66 games with High-A Salem this season, Travis is hitting .313/.378/.467 with 15 doubles, 4 triples, 5 home runs, 40 RBI, and 10 stolen bases. He ranks among Carolina League leaders in several offensive categories, including AVG (3rd), RBI (4th), hits (1st), OBP (3rd), and total bases (3rd). Travis is ranked by Baseball America as the No. 12 prospect in the Red Sox system.
In his first season in professional baseball in 2014, Travis combined between Short-Season Lowell (40 games) and Low-A Greenville (27 games) to hit .316/.351/.467 with 7 home runs, 44 RBI, and 5 stolen bases.
Travis played baseball at Indiana University from 2012-14, where he hit .327 with 31 home runs in 184 career games and was named the 2012 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and 2014 Big Ten Player of the Year.
The Sea Dogs begin a seven-game homestand this Saturday, June 27th, against the Reading Fightin Phils at 6:00 PM.
