Lewiston Post Storm Clean Up & Condition

Lewiston, Maine - City Administrator Ed Barrett notes that roads are passable this morning, although they are snow covered and have been narrowed due to snow banking. Motorists are urged to use caution, especially at intersections where visibility is limited and in areas where roads have been narrowed.

Crews are applying salt and sand to busier streets in preparation for another round of city-wide plowing aimed at reducing the snow cover on arterial and collector streets and widening out all streets, including those in residential areas.  This needs to be done to prepare for potential further storms on Friday and next Monday.  Unfortunately, this may result in additional snow in driveways.

Sidewalk plowing is underway in the downtown area and will move to priority areas around schools
later today.  Given the volume of snow, however, it will take some time to address non-priority areas.  Motorists should be aware that pedestrians may be present on roads until sidewalks can be cleared.

Starting next week night time snow removal will begin in the downtown and then move to other areas where needed to restore lane width or visibility.

This was a major storm that dropped over 27 inches of snow on Lewiston, one of the highest storm totals in recent history.  We’d like to thank the public for heading the warnings and avoiding unnecessary travel during the storm.  We’d also like to ask your patience as we attempt to deal with its aftermath.
