Portland, Maine - Boston Red Sox pitcher Brandon Workman, who started the 2013 season with the Sea Dogs and finished the season pitching for the Red Sox in the World Series, will be returning to Portland for the Sea Dogs 2014 Hot Stove Dinner and Silent Auction. Workman will be joined by Red Sox outfielder and former Sea Dog Jackie Bradley Jr. and longtime Red Sox official Dick Berardino. The event will take place on Friday, January 17th at 5:30 PM at the Sable Oaks Marriott in South Portland. The event benefits the Maine Children's Cancer Program. Additional guests will be announced.
Tickets for the event are now on sale now. Tickets are $50.00 and are limited to 300. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Hadlock Field Ticket Office, by phone at 207-879-9500 or online at www.seadogs.com. Doors open at 5:30 PM with the Silent Auction running from 5:30 to 7:00 PM. A buffet dinner will be served at 6:30 PM and the program will begin at 7:00 PM. Workman opened the 2013 season by posting a 5-1 record with a 3.43 ERA in 11 games with the Sea Dogs. He made his Major League debut on July 10 in Seattle. With the Red Sox he produced a 6-3 record with a 4.97 ERA in 20 games (3 starts) and was a member of the Red Sox post-season roster. In seven post-season appearances Workman went 0-1 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER/ 8.2 IP) with four strikeouts. In the World Series, Workman made three appearances with a 0-1 with 0.00 ERA (0 ER/ 3.1 IP). In 2012 Workman was the Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year after going 10-8 with a 3.50 ERA and 130 strikeouts in 25 starts between Single-A Salem and Double-A Portland. The Bowie, Texas resident was selected by the Red Sox in the second round of the June 2010 draft.
"Brandon Workman is a great example of the pipeline of players going from Portland to Boston, it was great to see him and Xander Bogaerts go from Portland to the World Series in 2013," said Sea Dogs' Executive Vice President and General Manager Geoff Iacuessa. "We are honored that he will be able to join us for our Hot Stove event in January and support a great cause."
Bradley Jr. opened the 2013 season with Boston Red Sox after an impressive Spring Training. He appeared in 37 games for the Red Sox in 2013. In his first full professional season in 2012, Bradley Jr. was selected by the Boston Baseball Writers as the Red Sox Minor League Player of Year and the centerfield was honored by the Red Sox as the Defensive Player of the Year. He appeared in 61 games with the Sea Dogs in 2012 batting .271 (62-for-229) with 16 doubles, six home runs, 29 RBI, and eight stolen bases. The Richmond, Virginia native was selected by the Red Sox in the supplemental round (40th overall) of the June 2011 draft.
Berardino has spent the last 46 years in the Red Sox organization, the last ten as a player development consultant. He had an eight year career as a minor league outfielder. He has a minor league managerial career that spanned 21 seasons including 20 in the Red Sox organization. He served as the Red Sox bullpen coach (1989-1990) and in 1991 was the Red Sox third base coach. Berardino received the Red Sox Edward M. Kenney Player Development Award in 1998 and in 2008; he was awarded the Judge Emil Fuchs Memorial Award by the Boston Baseball Writers for long and meritorious service to baseball.
All proceeds from the dinner and silent auction will benefit the official charity of the Portland Sea Dogs'; the Strike Out Cancer in Kids Program. The Strike Out Cancer in Kids Program was established in 1995 to raise money for the Maine Children's Cancer Program. For every strikeout that a Sea Dogs' pitcher throws money is raised through generous pledges of businesses and individuals. The Sea Dogs open the 2014 season on the road in Reading, Pennsylvania on April 3rd. The home opener is set for Thursday, April 10th at 6:00 PM against the New Britain Rock Cats.
