Maine Made Businesses Get Down East Exposure

MAINE - With the holiday shopping season already underway, many Maine Made products and businesses are getting some world-wide publicity.

More than 130 businesses, all members of the Maine Made Program, are included in the latest issue of Down East Magazine, which has the largest paid circulation of any publication in the state.

The Maine Made Program has over 1,700 businesses enrolled throughout the state, with membership continuously growing. Administered through the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), Maine Made is synonymous with high quality. The program gives businesses access to unique branding and a distinct marketing advantage.

"The Maine Made program has helped thousands of small businesses and microenterprises break into what has become a highly competitive and successful marketplace, both domestically and internationally," said Governor Paul R. LePage. "To have such a wide array of their products represented in an established Maine publication, especially at this time of year, is truly something to be proud of."

The feature piece this month covers certified-Maine products for the home, quality clothing, Maine Made toys, local artisanal foods and unique pet supplies. Some of the Maine Made members lining the nine-page spread included Quoddy, Inc. (footwear); Hyperlite Mountain Gear; Brownie's Bakery ("Peanut Butter Lobster" dog treats); Islandport Press (children's books); and Madder Root (tea towels, napkins and produce bags).

John Branagan, director of marketing for Hyperlite Mountain Gear of Biddeford, spoke to the benefits of not only being able to claim "Made in the USA", but also the marketing impact of touting the company's Maine roots. "Maine Made is taking the "Made in the USA" brand to a whole other level," said Branagan. "We are a global company, selling our product on all seven continents, routinely doing orders in places like Japan and South Korea. When buyers see Maine Made, they know it means quality."
