Pirates Look to Right Ship against Springfield

Springfield, MA – The Portland Pirates travel to Springfield Saturday to face the Falcons for the second time this season. Puck drop is set for 7 pm as the Pirates look to snap their two game losing skid.

The Worcester Sharks defeated the Pirates 3-1 last night in the annual Black Friday game at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. Brett Hextall scored for the Pirates, his 4th goal of the year, but it was not enough. Mark Visentin made 31 saves for the Pirates, who had a 3 game home point streak snapped with the loss.

The Falcons dropped a 4-3 overtime game to the Manchester Monarchs last night. Ryan Craig, Jonathan Marchessault, and Cody Goloubef scored three goals in a row to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead, but Manchester struck back, eventually winning it in overtime on a Nick Deslauriers goal. Jeremy Smith took the loss in net for the Falcons, making 26 saves on 30 shots.

Key Bank Key to the Game

Top Gun: The Pirates have scored two goals in their last two games, with neither goal coming from the top line. The Pirates first line must act as a fire starter for the offense and a goal or two could turn the Pirates’ fortunes around.

The Pirates and Falcons last met at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on November 16th, a 2-1 shootout victory for Springfield. Mike Lee made 30 saves for the Pirates, but former Pirate Mike McKenna stopped 35 shots and was perfect in the shootout to seal the victory. Gilbert Brule had the goal for the Pirates, while Darryl Boyce had the Falcons’ lone strike.

Tonight’s game can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County.
