Brunswick, ME — In an effort to better the community and promote recycling, a team from Mid Coast Hospital took to the streets last week to remove flyaway trash and tossed-out litter from public roadways. The event coincided with “Maine Recycles Week,” proclaimed by the State of Maine as a time to raise awareness and honor recycling success in Maine.
Organized by Mid Coast Hospital’s Environmental Impact Committee (EIC), the cleanup focused on a 2.5-mile stretch of Bath Road, starting at the hospital entrance and moving north to the Pine Tree Waste transfer station where the waste was recycled at no charge.
“At Mid Coast we realize that caring for our community goes beyond the walls of our facilities,” said Molly Gardner, Linen and Waste Management Aide. “Picking trash off the streets helps to improve and protect the environment, providing a healthier place for all to live.”
The EIC has been in existence for almost 25 years with the goal of conserving energy and reducing waste. Since then, the hospital has significantly reduced the amount of waste in the waste stream. Other improvements include lower energy light bulbs, innovative recycling programs, and staff education and awareness about environmental issues.
Ralph Precopio, Territory Manager for Pine Tree Waste, the hospital’s waste collection and recycling vendor commented, “Mid Coast Hospital does a great job focusing on environmental improvements. They’ve become a leader in reducing waste by integrating new recycling programs and constantly finding ways to improve.”
