Musician Spotlight: Rising Singer/Songwriter Skyla Rayne

There's a talent young Singer/Songwriter from San Diego, California by the name of Skyla Rayne. This young Singer/Songwriter started at the age of 3 in theater. Skyla has two original songs entitled "Butterfly " and "Twisted Love" that you can listen to via her Facebook "Band Profile" tab.

Skyla Rayne is a singer/songwriter from San Diego, and has a great imagination for lyrics, and composing.

Like a lot of people Skyla started out performing early in life, and this early start brought her to be a recognized vocalist. She began on stage at age three in theater and was cast in "Traditions of Christmas" through Christian Community Theater for 5 years with her father, and also performed with her father in ACT San Diego's "High School Musical", and had a lead in ACT's "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown!". Skyla had an amazing performance during the holiday season of 2011. She played the lead role, "Emily" at Legoland California, which was her favorite because she made lots of friends and got to be on stage with an actor from iCarly. She said, she had to work really hard, and work a lot, but it was worth it because, she got paid!

Skyla's vocal talent is making her a winner all around. Just recently she won first place in the Grammy Cover contest for age 12 and under through RaterBug.com with her cover of "Bound to You". And because of RaterBug's positive feedback to it's member's, it inspired her father to sing with her and record "I Will Always Love You" as a duet. She also had an original, Happy Birthday (which can be found at www.reverbnation.com/skylarayne ), submitted through the PTA Reflection competition and won local, county level at age 9.

What Skyla likes best about singing is feeling the passion, it is like letting her soul out and expressing herself through her music. Skyla is wonderful with expression in her songs, not only vocally, but facial as well. Her dad is her inspiration for singing. She says, he is an amazing singer and he coaches her along.

Skyla likes to play piano, and write music. So far she has written numerous songs and has written several piano compositions. Most of her lyrics come from feelings and emotions that she has seen others go through. She sometimes writes songs based on her own feelings. One of her very first originals was, "Raindrop's Reflection", which is a favorite because she feels that a lot of people can relate to the feelings expressed in the song and the lyrics. When she was seven she wrote a song called, "Imagine". This one is special too because it helps kids realize they can do anything they dream and imagine. Skyla feels that she has been blessed with the gift of music.  Skyla has 3 original available on iTunes, including her hits "Buttefly" and "My Voice."

And most recently, Skyla has been invited into the "Los Angeles Dream Team", a chapter of "Tunes for Tots" that throws benefit concerts for the "Make a Wish Foundation". She is currently performing throughout Southern California, was recently and actress in Robbie Willimam's new music video, filmed in a new Christmas Film in production now, and has been cast in the Anti-Bullying film, "You Think You Know Me."   Her hit "Butterfly" will be on the movie soundtrack and in the film.  Skyla is also an actress and has recently worked on the film, Monster & Me, and has been cast as "Raquel" in a short film called "The Brownie."

Skyla, when did you start singing?
I started singing as soon as a could talk.  I started singing the ABC’s in perfect pitch at 18 months old.  By the time I was 3 years old I was singing and performing in song and dance competitions and was in my very first stage performance as a ballerina.  I also have been playing the piano as soon as I could reach the piano keys.  My mom says I knew a lot about music before I could barely talk.  I played the lowest key on the piano and said “scary” and then played the highest note and said “happy.”  This was when I was a baby and could barely stand on my tippy toes and reach the keys.

Was it your dream to be a singer?
I have always loved singing and have spent almost all my free time growing up, singing and playing piano.  As I have grown up, it has been my dream to create music and have the opportunity to share my music with as many people in the world that I can.  Getting my music out there is what I dream to do.

Tell us about your style of singing?
I have many different styles of singing but I mostly like to sing from the heart.  Most of my songs are a mix between soft pop, melodic, or ballad. They are usually soft yet build to a very powerful, intense emotional peak.  It is very hard to explain, but most of all, I like to play the piano and sing from the heart.

Are there challenges being in school and pursuing a singing career?
Yes, there are conflicts because I have a lot of absences and have to make up work a lot.  But, all of my teachers and my principal support me very much.  One of my official videos for my original “Butterfly” was filmed at my school.  I go to a performing arts school, so it was very nice that my teachers helped select the cast for my music video.  My music video also is sort of anti-bullying theme and so my principal often plays the music video at school orientations and assemblies.

Does your parents and friends support you?
My parents support me a lot.  My mom helps me with everything. She has taken me to may vocal lessons and piano lessons.  She helps me record and film many of my originals songs & videos at home.  She also has taken me to music studios for professional recording many times.  This involves a lot of driving to Los Angeles.  I performed professionally on stage at Legoland as “Emily” in their Holiday production, Let it Snow.  My mom had to drive me back and forth for all my rehearsals and all my shows.  My mom also takes me to Los Angeles a lot for auditions and many singing performances.  My Dad is a fantastic singer too.  He coaches me sometimes and helps with all my equipment set up when I have performances.  He even performs with me on stage some times.  My friends are also supportive.  They share my music around with all of their friends.  They also come to many of my local performances to support me.

Do you write your own songs?
I absolutely love to write music.  I am as much a songwriter as a singers.  I have been writing songs since I was 5 years old.  My parents captured my very first original on video then.  Since then, I have written numerous originals and now I am writing a new one about once per week.  When I come home from school everyday, I go straight to the piano.  There are usually some new lyrics or melodies in my head that I just have to get out.  I have 3 originals that have been professionally recorded and are available on iTunes.  I also have several other originals that have not been finished professionally because of the costs involved but some of them can be heard on Reverbnation or my YouTube Channel for now.

If so, tell us what goes into writing a great song?
The most important part of writing a song is putting yourself into the song.  Meaning, you have to put all your feelings into it. You have to sing from your heart, and feel the music.  While doing this, it is also important to include certain elements to the song.  For example, a soft song should build and become more powerful and intense.  My songs usually evolve as I play them over and over again.  Usually after I write a song, it changes a few times before I am satisfied with it.

Where was your first performance, were you excited?
I have had so many performances my whole life that I don’t remember my first performance, I was probably too young to remember.  But, usually I get a little nervous before every performance.  Once I start singing, that feeling goes away and I am so excited and love being on the stage.

Where have you been able to perform?
I have performed in many theatrical productions.  I have performed at the Lyceum Theatre in San Diego in two productions, High School Musical and You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.  I also have preformed as a professional singer and actress at Legoland, California as “Emily” in their holiday production “Let it Snow.” I have recently performed all over Southern California in many charity concerts, including places such as the Celebrity Centre in Hollywood.  I have also performed this summer at Campland by the Bay, a huge summer camping spot in San Diego.  I also recently performed at the Pierre Garden in Glendale.  This was an event to premiere and new collaboration song & video that I am part of.

I will be performing this month at the Kids Expo. I have now been invited to perform at the Girl Scouts Convention in San Diego in January 2013.  I am very excited for that show.

Who inspires you with your singing and songwriting?
I am much inspired by Christina Aguilera.  I love her vocal tone and control.  I am also inspired by Alicia Keys.  I love that she too writes her songs and plays the piano.  I love to sing Christina’s “Bound to You” and have performed it many times.  I also love to play and sing “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys.  I too have performed this piano/vocal cover song at many recent shows.  I also like Ariana Grande and Victoria Justice.

If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Anywhere in New York.  I am happy with any crowd.  I just love to perform no matter where or how big the audience.

Along the same line, who would you love to perform with?
I recently saw Victoria Justice in concert.  She is fun and full of energy.  I also love her talent, so I think I would love to perform live with her.

What are some of your goals for your Music?
I want to share my music with the world.  The more people my music reaches the better.  This is because, I believe that my music has a message that could uplift a person at just the right moment or make them feel better or inspired.  I would love to see hear my music in many television shows, or movies. A lot of my lyrics are inspired by life, not usually my own experiences, but some of the life challenges that I see a lot of people experience.

What do you hope to accomplish with your singing/songwriting?
I would love to earn a living someday as a singer, songerwriter or both.  I am also an actress and would love to be featured as an actress/singer on television or in a movie someday.  So far, one of my original songs “Butterfly” has been selected to be in a film, You Think You Know Me, and it will be on the movie sountrack too.  I will be an actress in the film.  I also was recently casts in a short film “The Brownie,” and the Director is very interested in my music and is already considering me for other projects.  I am also an actress in a new music video for Robbie Williams which will be released late October.

Skyla, do you have any advice for those wanting to start a career in singing and songwriting?
Just do what comes naturally and eventually you will reach your goals.  Don’t try to be something your not, or what you think people want you to be. You have to be yourself and be true to who you really are as a musician.
