The Shortest Parade in Lincolnville’s Long History

Lincolnville, Maine - On Saturday, October 27th, Lincolnville community members and friends will gather on Main Street to move the old Lincolnville Center School across Route 52 to its new home.
With the help of nine borrowed hydraulic jacks, piping, timber donated by Viking Lumber, and a handful of volunteers, Move It! team leaders Jim Dunham, Tom May, and Paul Cartwright have already raised the 25 foot by 34 foot one-room building and coaxed it off its slab down to the edge of Route 52. “Lifting it was easy,” report the crew. “Turning something that big and that old was a little tricky, but it all went smoothly.”

Volunteers are needed for Saturday the 27th, when Route 52 will be closed briefly and the old school will be pulled across the street to its new site the old-fashioned way, using ropes and pulleys and people power. There, the building will be renovated and refurbished, and will become the permanent home of the newly established Lincolnville Community Library.

“So many people have already participated in the auction and play and pie sales we’ve held to raise funds for this move,” says Diane O’Brien, Move It! coordinator. “This is going to be a real community celebration.”

Able-bodied volunteers are asked to meet at 8:30 at the schoolhouse for registration and instructions. Pulling will begin at 9 am. Hot dogs, hot coffee and home-baked treats will be sold to benefit the building’s renovation.
