Dead River Company Announces New Energy Options for its Customers

The LePage Administration applauds Dead River’s commitment to lowering customers’ energy costs

Augusta, Maine - To provide its customers with more energy options, Dead River Company announced that it is expanding its energy portfolio to include electricity. Ken Fletcher, the Director of the Governor’s Energy Office, took part in the announcement to applaud Dead River for their work to bring more energy options to their customers.

“The LePage Administration emphasizes options for Maine ratepayers to allow ratepayers to take charge of their energy future,” said Fletcher. “We applaud Dead River Company’s initiative to provide new and innovative options to save their customers money.”

Dead River Company will supply off-peak electricity used in electric thermal storage units. It is partnering with Biddeford-based Thermal Energy Storage of Maine (TESM), the manufacturer’s representative of Steffes Electric Thermal Storage (ETS) Systems, to sell and install the units as well. This new option can serve as a supplement to a current home heating system, or in some instances, fully replace a current heating system based on the homeowner’s needs.

For more than a year, Dead River has been heavily researching ETS and the possible implementation of ETS in their energy portfolio. Because of its easy implementation and potential benefits and savings to Dead River’s customers, they inevitably decided to provide the new service.

Electric Thermal Storage is a proven, energy efficient technology that converts off-peak, low-cost electricity to heat and stores it in high-density ceramic bricks for use 24-hours a day. ETS is currently used in 24 states and four Canadian provinces in North America.

The LePage Administration has been a strong advocate for expanding energy options and allowing a competitive and fair energy market to provide choices to Maine ratepayers. Previously, the Administration has proposed regulatory and efficiency reforms, such as removing energy caps on renewable sources, to allow more diverse and competitive energy options into the Maine market.
