Sea Dogs Score Three in the Ninth, Walk-Off Over Richmond

Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (23-30) walked-off with a 4-3 victory over the Richmond Flying Squirrels (24-26) at Hadlock Field Wednesday night thanks to a three-run ninth and a walk-off error by Mitch Delfino on a hard grounder by David Chester.

The Sea Dogs trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the ninth facing Pedro Rodriguez (L, 2-3, BS, 4).  After Luis Martinez (1-3, BB) grounded out to begin the inning, Blake Tekotte (2-4, 2B, R) singled and Marco Hernandez (3-5, 2B, R, SB) doubled to put the tying runs in scoring position with just one out.  Carlos Asuaje (2-5, 2 RBI, R) delivered the game-tying, two-run single through the middle to make it a 3-3 ballgame, while also advancing to second base on the throw home.  After an intentional walk to Jantzen Witte (1-3, RBI, 2 BB), Chester (1-5) hit a hard ground ball on the left side of the infield that went off the glove of third baseman Mitch Delfino and ricocheted into left field, allowing Asuaje to score from second to win the game for Portland.

Sea Dogs' starter Luis Diaz lasted 5.2 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, walking two and striking out three.  Madison Younginer and Jorge Marban (W, 1-0) combined to pitch the final 3.1 innings and allowed just two hits.  The Sea Dogs bullpen has now worked 11 consecutive scoreless innings.

Kelvin Marte started strong for Richmond, going 5.1 scoreless innings and allowing five hits, one walk, and striking out three.  The Squirrels took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI groundout by Devin Harris (0-4, RBI), then extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth on a bloop two-run single to left field off the bat of Rando Moreno (1-3, 2 RBI).  The Sea Dogs cut the deficit to 3-1 in the eighth on an RBI single by Aneury Tavarez (1-4, RBI), but Chester was thrown out at home plate by Devin Harris to end the inning on the play.  Luckily for Portland, it was Chester's ground ball in the ninth that provided the winning play an inning later.
