Dogs' Rally Falls Short as Richmond Takes Series Opener 4-3

Portland, Maine - Joe Biagini allowed three earned runs in 7.1 innings and led the Richmond Flying Squirrels (24-25) to a 4-3 win over the Portland Sea Dogs (22-30) in the series opener at Hadlock Field on Tuesday night.

Biagini (W, 4-3) allowed just one baserunner - a triple by Carlos Asuaje (1-3, RBI, R) - through the first five innings in pacing Richmond to a 4-1 lead.  The Flying Squirrels scored twice in the second inning on an RBI single by Daniel Carbonell (1-4, RBI, R) and a wild pitch by Justin Haley that allowed Ryan Lollis (2-4, R) to score.  Haley (L, 1-7) worked 4.1 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits while walking three and striking out five.

Richmond added two more runs in the fourth.  Daniel Carbonell attempted to steal second base and Portland catcher Luis Martinez threw the ball into center field, allowing Mitch Delfino (1-4, R) to score from third base.  Carbonell would advance to third on the play and subsequently score on a sac fly by Jackson Williams (0-2, RBI).

The Sea Dogs closed the gap in the sixth.  After Jonathan Roof (1-4, R) singled and Blake Tekotte (1-2, BB, R) walked, Marco Hernandez (0-3) bunted the runners over and Carlos Asuaje promptly delivered an RBI groundout.  Jantzen Witte (1-4, 2 RBI) followed up with an RBI single to make it 4-3.

The Sea Dogs rallied in the ninth off of Josh Osich, recording back-to-back singles by Aneury Tavarez (1-4) and Luis Martinez (1-4) with two outs.  After a passed ball allowed both runners to move into scoring position, Jonathan Roof had a chance to tie the game or deliver a walk-off hit.  But Osich got Roof to ground out to shortstop, with Rando Moreno's throw just barely beating Roof to the bag at first base to end the ballgame.

The series continues tonight at Hadlock Field, Luis Diaz (0-4, 7.53) gets the start for Portland while Kelvin Marte (4-0, 3.82) is scheduled to go for Richmond.  Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 207-879-9500 or by going online to seadogs.com.
