Route 1 Improvement Project in Ogunquit Breaks for the Summer

Ogunquit, Maine - The Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) began a $13.5 million dollar project to reconstruct Route 1 in Ogunquit and build two new bridges over the Ogunquit and Josias Rivers in early March 2015. Due to the heavy tourism economy of the area, road construction will be suspended during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, and again from June 21st through Labor Day. Though work on the two new bridges will continue, temporary bridges will be sure to keep traffic moving.

Route 1 is the primary road for Ogunquit, which swells from approximately 3,500 to nearly 35,000 each summer. "Halting construction for eleven weeks during the busiest season will allow residents and visitors to the area to enjoy the summer months without interruption," noted MaineDOT Project Manager Ernie Martin, "I encourage residents and visitors to go to MaineDOT.gov to sign up for email alerts or like the Ogunquit Project on Facebook for regular updates."

Ogunquit Town Manager, Tom Fortier, added, "Route 1 is the lifeline for all of us year-round, and the gateway for thousands of visitors each summer. We appreciate everyone's continued patience over the next few weeks until construction is suspended for the summer."

Work will continue on two bridges in Ogunquit, but temporary bridges will ensure two-way traffic will be maintained. The project is expected to be completed by December 30, 2016.
