Perspicere: Paintings by Richard William Blanchard and Amy Peters Wood at Harlow Gallery in June‏

“Ashaloona Dock” By Richard William Blanchard
“Nearly High Tide” by Amy Peters Wood
Hallowell, Maine - “Perspicere”, the Harlow Gallery’s June exhibition featuring paintings by Richard William Blanchard and Amy Peters Wood, is on view June 5-27 at 160 Water Street in Hallowell.  Perspicere (Per-spic-er-ay) is a Latin verb meaning “to observe, see through”. The public is invited to an opening reception on Friday, June 5, 5-7pm, followed by a gallery talk from 7-8pm led by Maine State Historian Earle Shettleworth who will interview Blanchard and Wood about their work and process.

Using egg tempera paint made from her own hens, artist Amy Peters Wood of Georgetown, Maine knits together intersecting perspectives, near and far, above and below, before and after, imagined and real. These juxtapositions ultimately consolidate to form a single image, one perceived from an indeterminate vantage point. Creating planes which recede tilt and plunge, Wood reinforces the vast feeling of nature and uncertainty to the spatial dimensions within the painting. Visit Wood online at www.peterswood.com.

Richard William Blanchard's series of contemporary abstract paintings using oil and acrylic on canvas explore a visual language of fragmented landscapes, cartouches, and ruin like structures that signify inner and outer realms; where multiple hemispheres stack over one another making horizons, land and sky interchangeable. Blanchard is from Winthrop, Maine and currently resides in Los Angeles, California. To learn more, visit Blanchard’s website at  www.richardwilliamblanchard.com.

Perspicere has been made possible thanks to a major gift from Virginia C. Wood of Massachusetts, and is sponsored by Book Orchard Press, Diana Scully of Hallowell and by an anonymous donor.

Perspicere is also supported in part by our season sponsors: The Bank of Maine, Capitol Dental Care, Current Media, Dead River Company, the City of Hallowell, the Jennings Family, Kennebec Savings Bank, Scrummy Afters Candy Shoppe and the Vallee Brothers, Chris & Ray Vallee.

Exhibitions at the Harlow Gallery are always free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Wednesday-Saturday 12-6 pm. The Harlow Gallery is a membership based 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to connecting and celebrating art, artists and community  in downtown historic Hallowell since 1963.
