Bee Talk and Open Hive Demonstration at Merryspring

Camden/Rockport, Maine - Beekeepers Holly and David Edwards will lead a presentation about beekeeping and an open-hive demonstration at Merryspring Nature Center on Tuesday, May 26 at 12:00 pm.

In early summer 2014, a swarm of honeybees was found on Merryspring property. The Edwards will speak about how they captured the swarm and incorporated the bees into hives at the park. After a short presentation about the importance of pollinators and the basics of beekeeping, they will take the group outside to the Merryspring hives for an open-hive demonstration to view bee society, honeycomb, and maybe even the queen.

Since part of this talk will take place outdoors, guests are asked to wear light-colored, weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes, and if they choose, a mosquito net. A limited amount of nets will be available for use. Insect repellant should not be worn during this program.

The Edwards are third-year beekeepers. They helped teach during the 2015 Bee School and serve on the board of the Knox Lincoln County Beekeepers Club. Currently they maintain hives at Aldermere Farm, Erickson Fields Preserve, Merryspring, and at their home in Camden.

This program is part of the Spring Talk series at Merryspring, co-sponsored by The First and Jackson Landscape Services. Tuesday Talks are open to the public for $5, with free admittance for Merryspring members.

Merryspring is a member-supported, non-profit nature education center and park located at the end of Conway Road just off Rt. 1 by the Hannaford shopping plaza in Camden. For more information, call Merryspring at 236-2239, email info@merryspring.org or visit our website at www.merryspring.org.
