Pirate Issues ‘Challenge’ to Local Businesses

The pirate “Scribe,” Commodore of the Damariscotta River Pirate Rendezvous, has issued a challenge for local businesses to support their favorite charities, and have a wee bit of fun while doing it.

“I hereby issue a Pirate Challenge to all merchants and traders: Join us in lending a hand to local non-profits!” declared the Scribe (known otherwise as Greg Latimer). “If ye can muster a small crew of your work-mates and spend a few hours helping children have a good time playing games, the Pirate Rendezvous will make a donation in your name to the local charity of your choice.”

Representatives of businesses accepting the challenge need only arrive for their appointed four-hour shift at the Kid’s Pirate Camp during the Pirate Rendezvous on Saturday, June 20. When the event is over, proceeds from the games and activities will be counted and shared out based on shifts covered by the non-profit supporters. A check will be mailed to the charity on behalf of the business, and a pirate thank you note will be mailed to the business specifying how much money was raised through their efforts.

“I like to call it a bake sale without the bake, or the sale,” said Pirate Rendezvous Event Director Greg Latimer. “All that folks have to do is get on the volunteer schedule, show up for their shift, help with a game or activity, and contribute their share of the treasure. The more volunteers we get, the more games and activities we can open, and the more profits for everybody. Nobody has to worry about unsold bakery goods, not selling enough baked goods to make a profit; or even baking them in the first place.”

According to Latimer, the objective is to create an event that encourages the participation of, and fundraising for, a wide range of local non-profits. “I’m hoping to spread our pirate “tent” as widely as possible to benefit as many groups as possible.” Latimer said.

Non-profits are also welcome to work shifts and share the treasure, and a number are already signed up.
