Happenings
As media has changed and evolved, sometimes we lose the opportunity for serendipity. For those who remember buying LPs (remember those!), there was often the joy of coming across a song you never heard of – and certainly would not download by itself. It is the joy of discovery of browsing the aisles of the bookstore or library and discovering a novel you never considered. The same can be said for performances. For those who ventured last week to experience the National Theatre’s 50th birthday celebration – they encountered performances that were extraordinary and memorable. This week, maybe you’d like to take part in something you might never have experienced before: a thought provoking discussion on the economics of our nation; the passion of flamenco dancing from Spain; a film about the fast cars of Formula One. All very different experiences. All opportunities to enjoy the serendipity of discovering something new.
Inequality for All (PG) w/ Panel Discussion
At the heart of the film is a simple proposition: what is a good society, and what role does the widening income gap play in the deterioration of our nation's economic health? Explore the thinking of Robert Reich as he discusses this important topic. A panel discussion sponsored by the Maine Center for Economic Policy will take place following the screening. Thursday November 7 at 3 PM; 1 hr 30 mins for the film.
Blood Wedding and Suite Flamenca from the Teatro Real
Two distinct works - Blood Wedding and Suite Flamenca - combine for an incredible and combustible performance from the Teatro Real. The passion, color and rhythm of the flamenco envelope the viewer in this classic of Spanish dance. Thursday November 7 at 7 PM; 1 hr 45 mins
Rush (R)
Ron Howard’s entertaining film — which distills the thrill of racing into a clash of personalities, one nail-biting face-off, a catastrophic accident and a wild comeback — gets inside the heads of James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl), Formula One titans and rivals, who, in 1976, helped push the sport into mainstream consciousness. Opens on Friday November 8 at 2 PM and plays Friday at 2 and 7 PM, Saturday at 7 PM, Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday at 2 and 7 PM; 2 hrs 3 mins.
Met Live in HD: Puccini's Tosca
Patricia Racette portrays the tempestuous diva Floria Tosca in Luc Bondy’s production of Puccini’s enduring favorite. Roberto Alagna sings Tosca’s lover, the painter Cavaradossi, and George Gagnidze is the corrupt, lustful Scarpia. Riccardo Frizza conducts Puccini’s sweeping, dramatic tale of murder, lust, and political intrigue. Saturday November 9 at 1 PM. 3 hrs 35 mins.
What’s Next
Tom Hanks as “Captain Phillips,” Hugh Jackman in “Prisoners” are two of the films which will be screened at the Theater in November, along “Macbeth” from the National Theatre. Thanksgiving weekend we’ll run two different movies – matinees for the younger folks of “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs II” and evenings for the older folks of “Gravity.”
