Rockland, Maine-Today the Sea Princesses visited The Maine Lighthouse Museum. "The mission of the Maine Lighthouse Museum is to educate the public regarding the long standing traditions, heroism and progress of America's Lighthouse and Lifesaving services and the United States Coast Guard through the conservation and interpretation of the nation's most significant collection of lighthouse and lifesaving artifacts. The Maine Lighthouse Museum is located in Rockland, Maine, the heart of the Midcoast. From sparkling lenses to heartwarming stories of the keepers and their families, the Maine Lighthouse Museum is truly America's lighthouse museum."

It is very important that all of the girls understand the history of our maritime heritage, as a knowledge of our past helps us to better navigate our future.  Our guide for the tour, a former lighthouse keeper himself led the girls through the fascinating displays.  I think my favorite part was the story of Abby Burgess who at the age of 17 was left to man the Matinicus Rock Lighthouse when her farther was forced to make the trip to the mainland for medicine for his sick wife.  A winter storm blew up the Gulf of Maine and Abby's father was not able to returm to the island for six weeks!  Abby not only took care of her ailing mother but all the duties of the light station.  The lights never failed the whole time keeper Burgess was away.  What a great example for these girls that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to.
