Skip StrongRescue at Sea!

Penobscot Bay Capt. Skip Strong will speak about his daring rescue with an oil tanker, in a tropical storm off the coast of Florida in 1994, of an oceangoing tugboat and barge. Strong, then captain of the oil tanker carrying 10 million gallons of crude, was trying to outrun tropical storm Gordon when he picked up a distress call off the Florida coast on November 15, 1994. Strong's was the only vessel close In Perilenough to respond. He decided to attempt a rescue, although doing so put his own crew and cargo at risk. He has described this harrowing rescue in his fascinating book In Peril: A Daring Decision, a Captain's Resolve, and the Salvage that Made History.

Capt. Skip Strong graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1984 and was a captain by age 27. His company is Penobscot Bay and River Pilots Association, and he is one of fifteen licensed pilots in Maine.

Skip Strong will speak this Thursday, July 25, 7:00 pm at Penobscot Marine Museum's Stephen Phillips Memorial Library, 11 Church Street, Searsport. Tickets in advance $8 members, $10 non-members, or at the door $12 members, $15 non-members.   Buy tickets online at http://skipstrong.eventbrite.com or call 207-548-2529.

John Mock captures in music and in photographs the heritage of the sea,
from New England to Ireland, through his unique concert presentation "From the Shoreline".

"Simply phenomenal...a concert of John's is a wonderful experience," says Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum's Director of Education.

John performs original instrumental compositions on the guitar, concertina, and tin whistle.  His photography is projected onto a screen behind him, and his casual narration and storytelling tie it all together.
