Coast Guard medically evacuates sailor from vessel north of Vinalhaven, Maine

Rockland, Maine — Coast Guard rescue crews medically evacuated a 79-year-old man from the sailing vessel Elusive who was suffering from possible fractured ribs at 12:41 a.m. Friday, approximately a half-mile north of Vinalhaven, Maine.

Watchstanders at Sector Northern New England received a call via VHF radio at 11:24 p.m. and launched a Station Rockland 25-foot response-boat small.

The Elusive was located at 12:08 a.m. The man was safely transferred to the small boat at 12.41 a.m.

“He was picked up and safely transported back to Station Rockland,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael Joyce, a watchstander at Sector Northern New England. “Knox County EMS took him to Penobscot Bay Medical Center for treatment.”
