“Holes” July 29 Movie in the Park

“Holes” July 29 Movie in the Park

One of the library’s favorite movies, “Holes” (PG; 2003; 117 minutes), will be screened on Monday evening, July 29, at 8:15 in the Camden Amphitheatre as part of the Camden Public Library’s Monday Night Movies in the Park series. The movies are free, bring blankets or chairs for seating. The movie is presented with support from The First.

Camp Green Lake, where there has been no rain for a hundred years, is a summer camp with an unusual method of discipline. The camp makes all of its wards dig large holes under the guise of building character; the real reason is a plan to find a buried treasure left in the desert long ago by a legendary bandit queen named Kissin’ Kate Barlow.

The movie is based on Louis Sachar’s award-winning novel Holes. Camp Green Lake is a bizarre juvenile correction center that sits in the middle of the desert. Dogged by bad luck stemming from an ancient family curse, young Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf) is sent to Camp Green Lake, a very weird place that is not green and does not have a lake, with a wondrously wicked Sigourney Weaver as the camp director. Through it all, Stanley and company must forge friendships as they try to unearth the mystery of what’s really going on in the middle of nowhere. “Holes” is a surprisingly sophisticated, charming, challenging, and satisfying movie.
