L’Elisir d’Amore, the charmingly rustic comedy that has been delighting audiences for the past 180 years, is directed by Bartlett Sher in a new production starring Anna Negrebko (Adeina), the tenor Matthew Polenzani (Nemorino), and the baritones Mariusz Kwiecien (Belcore), and Ambrogio Maestri (Dulcamara) in the principal roles.
"Elisir is almost two operas at once," says Sher. "It’s a great entertainment and an opera with something else happening underneath it. And that’s the Risorgimento, the development of Italian independence."
Aiding the director in bringing about his vision is Netrebko who plays the role of “Adina”. "I think Adina is a bit of a tomboy," Sher says, "and I think that allows for a real transformation over the course of the opera. Anna Netrebko is not only one of the great singers in the world, but an extraordinary performer and actress.
The opera’s four stars will be guided musically by Maestro Maurizio Benini, who remarks that at the time of this opera, political changes were surfacing simultaneously with new musical voices, with Donizetti at the forefront.
