Red Sox, Cody Ross announce June is 'Calling All Kids' Month at Fenway Park
Month-long Activities Presented by Hood® to Include Ticket Giveaways, Kids Taking the Field with Players, Continuation of Children’s Essay Contest, and Young Reporters as School Ends and Summer Begins
BOSTON, MA – In an effort to celebrate Fenway Park’s next generation of fans during its 100th anniversary season, the Boston Red Sox and Cody Ross today announced a month-long celebration of kids by designating June as Calling All Kids month. A parent of two young children himself, Ross made the announcement in conjunction with the organization.
“My five-year-old son loves to come to Fenway Park every day,” Ross said. “I realize that not every child has that same opportunity, so we want to extend experiences to as many kids as possible. As players, we want all of our young fans to know how much we appreciate their energy and excitement. With the school year ending and summer vacation beginning, we can welcome them throughout this month and beyond.”
To help launch the program, Hood® will provide 100 free tickets per game for each of the fifteen home games in June. Hood will also distribute a thousand Hoodsie Ice Cream Cups to children in Boston. The ticket and ice cream donations will take place on June 2 at the Hood Milk Bottle at Boston’s Children’s Museum beginning at 10:00 a.m. The first 750 children accompanied by an adult will receive two tickets to a June game at Fenway Park.
“All of us with Hood care about children, as do our partners at the Red Sox,” said Lynne Bohan, Spokesperson from Hood. “We are delighted to help children go to the ballgame, and to provide our popular Hoodsies as a summer treat.”
In addition, Little Leaguers, RBI participants, or baseball camp kids from around New England will be selected to take the field with the team before each game in June.
Also, a child who has overcome adversity or made a contribution to the community will be honored as part of the “Child-Hood Heroes” program.
Lucky youngsters will also be selected to accompany Red Sox Bench Coach Tim Bogar to present the lineup card, and a child will have a chance to be the guest DJ in the scoreboard control room during Red Sox batting practice.
To incorporate children into the broadcasting aspect of the game, seven-year-old Jiana McDonald, the oldest daughter of outfielder Darnell McDonald, will act as the Red Sox’ kid reporter for online features. Jiana will work with Red Sox Productions and alongside NESN’s in-game reporter, Jenny Dell at various games. She will also file online reports on redsox.com.
The club will also extend reporting opportunities to Red Sox Kid Nation members on June 10, at a pre-game press conference with Red Sox players.
Children who are unable to attend a game at Fenway Park in June can still participate in Calling All Kids month by submitting an essay or piece of artwork to the Red Sox Essay Contest and Art Competition. Kids can submit essays of up to 600 words about Fenway Park. They can also submit their original art about Fenway Park. Cody Ross and Darnell McDonald will be among the judges who will choose the winners. Winners of the two competitions will get to meet a Red Sox player and say “Play Ball” before a game at Fenway Park. Their artwork or essay will also be on display at Fenway Park this season.
Essays and artwork should be submitted to: Fenway Park Essay and Art Contest, 4 Yawkey Way, Boston, MA 02215.
