Cessa Sets the Tone, Mets Top 'Dogs 3-1

Portland, Maine - Luis Cessa allowed just one run over eight innings and led the Binghamton Mets (34-30) to a 3-1 victory over the Sea Dogs (25-40) on Wednesday night at Hadlock Field.  The win clinches the three-game series for the Mets and extends their win streak to six games.

Cessa (W, 6-4) scattered five hits over eight innings while walking two and striking out five.  Paul Sewald (SV, 11) worked a perfect ninth to close it out for the Mets, who have won seven straight games at Hadlock Field dating back to last year's Eastern Division Championship Series.

The Mets got off to a quick start thanks to three hits in the first inning.  Brock Peterson (1-3, 2B, RBI) delivered an RBI single to put Binghamton on the board, then Michael Conforto (3-4, 2B, RBI, R) came around to score on a wild pitch by Heri Quevedo (L, 0-3) to make it 2-0 Binghamton.  Quevedo lasted just three innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits while walking three and striking out three.  Binghamton scored their third run in the third inning on an RBI double by Conforto to plate Mazzilli.  Portland scored their lone run of the game on an RBI groundout by Carlos Asuaje (1-3, RBI, BB)

The Portland bullpen singlehandedly kept the Sea Dogs in the game, allowing just two baserunners over the final six innings.  Mike McCarthy worked three scoreless and allowed just one hit, Miguel Celestino made his first appearance of the year for Portland and pitched two scoreless, and Jorge Marban pitched a perfect ninth.  The Sea Dogs' bullpen has now allowed just eight earned runs over their last 62.1 innings of relief (1.16 ERA).

The series concludes tomorrow evening, first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM.  It's 80s night at Hadlock Field and the Sea Dogs will also be having a fireworks show after the game.  William Cuevas (6-3, 3.10) takes the mound for Portland while Michael Fulmer (1-0, 3.44) makes the start for Binghamton.  Pregame coverage begins on the WPEI U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network at 5:40 PM.  Tickets are still available and can be purchased by phone at 207-879-9500 or online at seadogs.com
