Bangor Raceway/Scarborough Downs - May 5th is the biggest day in horse racing in the United States and in most places around the world. Millions of viewers will tune in to watch the Kentucky Derby, one of the most popular and recognizable sporting events in the world. Over 165,000 horse racing fans will flock to Louisville Kentucky and the storied Churchill Downs for this prodigious event!

“Derby Day” also marks the 2018 opening at Bangor Raceway, while Scarborough Downs, Maine’s other commercial harness racing track, has been hosting racing since the end of March. Avid racing fans celebrating at both tracks will have one eye on the Kentucky Derby and the other eye on some of the best live harness racing of the year. Excitement will be in the air as Maine’s fastest trotters and pacers, and their elite racing teams, compete for purses, glory, and bragging rights. Prizes, contests and other special events are planned at each track in tribute to the Kentucky Derby.

Known as the home of the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Oaks, Churchill Downs Racetrack conducts Thoroughbred horse racing in Louisville, Kentucky during three race meets in the Spring, September, and the Fall. The racetrack occupies 147 acres, featuring a one-mile dirt, oval racetrack and a seven-furlong turf race course. Thoroughbred racing, the Kentucky Derby, and the Kentucky Oaks have run continuously at Churchill Downs Racetrack since 1875. In addition, Churchill Downs Racetrack has hosted the Breeders’ Cup World Championship eight times."

Northern Aroostook Region Management Plan – 5 Year Review Public Meeting

ASHLAND, Maine - The Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands will hold a meeting on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at the Bureau’s Northern Region Office (45 Radar Road, Ashland), from 6:00 to 7:00 PM, to receive comments on proposed amendments to the Northern Aroostook Region Public Reserved Lands Management Plan adopted in 2007. These amendments resulted from a scheduled 5-year Plan review conducted over the past few months. Written comments will be accepted until May 23, two weeks after the Public Meeting.

The 15-year multiple-use Management Plan adopted by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry, Bureau of Parks and Lands for the Northern Aroostook Region in 2007 is subject to reviews at the 5 and 10 year intervals, and a full revision at 15 years. The purpose of the 5-year review is to document progress on addressing the Plan recommendations, and to assess whether any conditions have changed that would warrant amendments to the Plan prior to the 15-year revision. This review is conducted first with the Plan Advisory Committee (AC), and if any amendments are proposed, a public meeting is required to receive comments prior to adoption of the amendments.

The Bureau has corresponded with the AC regarding two proposals developed by the Bureau and requested comments. The proposals are for developing one or more camper trailer campsites at the Deboullie Unit, and for making an existing water-access campsite at Eagle Lake accessible to ATVs, and possibly to other vehicles in the future. The potential for these types of recreation improvements was discussed in the Plan; the Bureau has determined that the proposed amendments are now warranted due to ongoing demand for the enhancements.

The proposed amendments and the management have been posted on the Department website at http://www.maine.gov/dacf/n_aroostook.

After the comment period, the Final plan amendments will be prepared for review and adoption by the Commissioner and will become part of the Northern Aroostook Region Management Plan.

**Essentials of College Planning for Adults - Wednesday, May 9 and 23, 10 a.m.**

This interactive workshop touches on the four steps in the college process: admissions, financial aid, career planning and study skills. The financial aid portion of this workshop will provide an overview of financial basics and the completion of the Free Application of Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Bring last year's income tax forms to this appointment. Call MEOC at 1-800-281-3703 to pre-register. This session is held at the DHHS offices that are in the same building as the CareerCenter. **Computer Skill Basics: Start at the Beginning - Friday, May 11, 9 to 11 a.m.**

This course is designed for the novice user to learn the basics of the computer components:

- Understanding the mouse and keyboard. - Cover the "basics" of typing a document using Microsoft Word. - Learn to get you "up and running" with your job search.

**It All Starts Here - Monday, May 14, 1 to 3 p.m.**

Take the first step towards a great career. In this valuable session you can pinpoint your interests and strengths and find career options that have real potential. This highly validated and reliable vocational assessment is the start in determining your future path or career. Are you investigative? Are you realistic? Are you enterprising or social? This self-directed assessment test will assist in determining a career or vocation choice based upon your personality traits. Find out what types of careers are right for you, right now!

May Programs for Job Seekers at the Wilton CareerCenter

WILTON- For those who are looking to make a change in careers or get a new job, the Wilton CareerCenter will be offering a variety of programs for job seekers in May. Secretary Dunlap to host ranked-choice voting information sessions

AUGUSTA - Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap will make four stops across the state during the month of May to provide information to voters regarding the new ranked-choice voting method that will be used in the June 12 Primary Election. Secretary Dunlap will visit:

Secretary Dunlap will provide information on what voters can expect to see at the polls and how the ranked-choice tabulation will be conducted, and answer voters' questions. He will also remind voters of the related People's Veto referendum question, which will be presented on a separate ballot on June 12.

Maine DOE approves formation of 12 regional service centers

Maine Department of Education Commissioner Robert G. Hasson, Jr has approved the formation of 12 Regional Service Centers as part of the Department’s EMBRACE Regionalization initiative. Collectively, the 12 centers represent 84 discrete School Administrative Units (SAU) and 56 percent of Maine’s students.

“We recognize the hard work of the visionaries who have realized the positive impact that regional service centers can have on the future of Maine’s educational landscape,” said Commissioner Robert G. Hasson, Jr. “These partnerships will allow participating districts to provide much-needed programs and services for the students of the region."

Maine DOE Regional Service Centers (RSC) are non-profit multi-service agencies formed in 2018 under 20-A M.R.S Chapter 123. The centers are established and operated for the purpose of serving its member school units’ needs and to:

• Increase access to high-quality engaging student programming.
• Increase SAU efficiency and effectiveness through technical assistance.
• Provide direct, regionally shared services.
• Implement grants received for state initiatives.

The Regional Service Center model is built to ensure maximum flexibility and creativity. The types of services reflected in the partnership agreements of the 12 RSCs address the needs of the local school communities that will be served by the regional service centers.

Over the next few months, the newly formed RSCs will work to obtain each member school unit’s school board and local approval. The RSCs that receive final approval from the Commissioner will begin serving their membership in the 2018–19 school year. The Regional Service Center application processes is ongoing. The Department anticipates an opportunity for a second round of applications in the next fiscal year.
 
Each SAU that is a member of a Regional Service Center will receive a Regionalization and Efficiency Assistance Allocation as part of their General Purpose Aid (GPA) from the State of Maine, and the Regional Service Center will receive direct State funding for operational costs.
