Local Author to give talk on Augusta's history at Lithgow Library on 6/24

Augusta, Maine - Lithgow Public Library will host a program on Augusta’s history with Roger Madore, author of Postcard History: Augusta on Wednesday, June 24 from 6-7 p.m.  The program, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the program room of Lithgow’s temporary quarters at the Ballard Center, 6 E. Chestnut Street in Augusta.

Madore showcases vintage postcards and images from his personal collection, most of which have never been published.  Most postcards featured in Postcard History: Augusta are more than 100 years old and pay tribute to many of the important memorials, monuments and parks of Maine’s capital city.  Several images reveal the original design of historic buildings still in existence today.

Born and raised in Augusta’s Sand Hill neighborhood and a graduate of Cony High School, Madore is employed by the state’s Office of Information Technology.  His interest in local history began as a child, first through family stories of early life in Augusta, then from visits to the Maine State Museum.  He has been collecting historic postcards of Augusta for nearly 30 years.  He is a member of the Kennebec Historical Society, Maine Historical Society, American  Philatelic Society and the Pine Tree Postcard Club.

“I hope this history of Augusta told in postcards will foster fond memories for longtime Augusta residents, kindle an interest in Augusta’s past with today’s younger generation, and inspire readers to learn more about their local history,” Madore said.
