Blue Hill, Maine - Local artist Frederica Marshall will present a slide show and talk about Japanese pottery at the Blue Hill Public Library on Thursday, May 28th at 7:00 PM. She will talk about its ancient history, how it is created, the philosophy of beauty and tradition, and modern concepts. She will illustrate and describe the 8-chambered wood-fired kiln at Yomitan Yaki in Okinawa as well as show examples of many styles of pottery from Mashiko and other famous sites. There will be an opportunity following the presentation to meet and talk with Frederica and view tea ceremony bowls and utensils.
During her 28 years of living in Japan, Frederica studied hand building, wheel throwing, and glazing techniques with several potters. While there, she also created a permanent raku kiln. Visit www.fredericamarshall.com for more information.
