Rock Cats Win 7-3, Sweep Sea Dogs

Portland, Maine - The New Britain Rock Cats (22-7) completed their sweep of the Sea Dogs (11-19) with a 7-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field.  It marks the first time New Britain has swept a series in Portland since April 27-29, 2001.

The Rock Cats have now won nine straight games, while the Sea Dogs have dropped four in a row - and seven straight at home.

The game was tied 3-3 after seven innings, but New Britain sent nine men to the plate in the eighth against Jonathan Aro.  After a one-out single by Pat Valaika (1-5, R) and a walk to Mike Tauchman (1-5, R, RBI, BB), Trevor Story hit a potential double play ball to Mike Miller, but Miller couldn't come up with the grounder and it allowed New Britain to load the bases.  Tyler Massey (2-5, 2 RBI, R) then delivered a two-run single to put the Rock Cats ahead 5-3, Tom Murphy (1-5, RBI) added an RBI single, then David Dahl (2-5, RBI, R) reached on an error by Carlos Asuaje to make it a 7-3 game.

Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision.  Mike McCarthy allowed one earned run on five hits while walking one and striking out two in five innings.  Matt Flemer went five-plus and allowed three earned runs on six hits, walking one and striking out one.

Gus Schlosser (6-2) picked up the win in relief, going the final three innings and allowing just one baserunner on a walk to Jantzen Witte (0-3, BB).  Aro (3-2) was the losing pitcher, allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits in one inning, walking one and striking out three.

The Trenton Thunder come to Hadlock Field to begin three-game series Monday night, first pitch is at 6:00 PM.  Williams Cuevas (4-1, 3.28) is the scheduled starter for Portland, while Brady Lail (1-2, 4.43) is expected to go for the Thunder.  Pregame coverage begins on the WPEI U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network at 5:40 PM.  Monday's at Hadlock Field are MOMdays, so any mom gets in free with the purchase of one child's general admission ticket.  Contact the box office at 879-9500 or visit in person at Hadlock Field to book your nine-inning vacation today!
