Set Sail With The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in the Fight Against Cancer

Leukemia Cup Regatta Series Gets Underway This Summer

The Leukemia Cup sails into the Washington Sailing Marina each September as local captains, junior skippers and power boaters raise funds and awareness for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).  Planning for the end of summer events is underway and the local sailing community has set a goal of raising $200,000 for the LLS mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Participants  race for the events’ honorary skipper – Col. Michael Stapleton,   a blood cancer survivor initially diagnosed in 2006 with myelodysplastic syndrome. Mike beat MDS that same year, but in 2012 was it was discovered he relapsed and his disease had transformed to an aggressive acute myeloid leukemia.  Currently undergoing treatment for his AML, the Air Force Colonel, husband and father, will serve as an inspiration to the teams as they raise funds for this important fight against blood cancer.

In partnership with the local sailing marinas, LLS will once again offer the Sail For Cancer Cures program. Created for those new to the world of sailing, participates will be introduced to the sport in a safe and supportive environment. New sailors will learn important principles and terminology and spend quality time on the water with fun, like-minded people. In exchange for training, sailors raise funds for LLS, compete for fundraising awards, and are guaranteed a crew position to race in the Leukemia Cup Regatta

The Leukemia Cup Series includes:

The Junior Leukemia Cup Regatta (date to be determined). Now in its fifth year, the Junior Leukemia Cup Regatta invites summer sailing school participants from the Washington Sailing Marina to sail for a cure and fundraise for those living with blood cancer.

The Power Boat Poker Run - Saturday, August 25  Participants roam the Potomac River collecting playing cards at several spots for their hand, which they turn in at the end of the day. A barbeque and award ceremony concludes the event; prizes will be distributed to the top three poker hands and top fundraisers.

The 19th Annual Leukemia Cup Regatta - Saturday, September 8. Races will be held throughout the afternoon. Spectator boats will be available to the public for a closer view of the races for $10 per person. Additionally, guests may purchase tickets for the post-race celebration, also $10 per person.
