Augusta, Maine: The public is invited to visit the lobby gallery at 45 Memorial Circle in Augusta from July 16 to September 7, 2012 to enjoy the work of Mount Vernon painter, Pamela Hetherly. Hetherly is showing some of her recent oil paintings, where she explores the use of color in light and shadow.
The exhibition, in the former ATM lobby of the 45 Memorial Circle (also known as the "Preti-Flaherty building), is viewable from outside the building from 9am to 9pm daily. Sponsored by the Kennebec Valley Art Association.
Pamela Hetherly has been drawing and painting all her life, beginning with her first childhood drawings of horses. Then in the third grade she drew a primer to help math-haters realize just how wonderful geometry was, and how geometry explained and related to the world they live in. Maybe this was the beginning of her long and quite diverse career. She grew up in Texas where she studied medicine, and moved to New England to practice almost 30 years ago. She changed careers while in Maine, becoming an engineer specializing in the design of bridges. She now devotes most of her working time to painting, in Mount Vernon and Fayette.

Her interest is in seeing and capturing color in light and shadow, using exaggerated color and value contrasts to dramatize activity. She is exploring gesture, light, and shadow with figure drawing. She tries to combine the two, looking for vigorous and lively compositions that grab attention, and then tell a story that causes pause.
