New Maine Geologic Fact and Locality Available

The Maine Geological Survey (MGS) is pleased to share its newest Maine Geologic Fact and Locality (GFL):  Viles Arboretum, Augusta, Maine. MGS hydrogeologist Ryan Gordon takes us mere steps from the Maine Geological Survey’s home base on the east side of Augusta to the Viles Arboretum, a 224-acre, State-owned natural area formerly known as the Pine Tree State Arboretum. The Arboretum’s six miles of trails are open to the public for passive recreation and the observation of natural history every day from dawn to dusk. From the fields and trails at the Arboretum, one can observe several aspects of local geology and hydrogeology, including some interesting intersections between geology and the human history of the site, such as a granite quarry and early drinking water delivery systems for the State Hospital.
