Crafting and Cooking with the Jumpstart January Series at the Camden Public Library

Camden, Maine - It’s a new decade — kick it off by expanding your repertoire of talents! At the start of every year, the Camden Public Library hosts a series of Jumpstart January workshops to inspire the community to get creative and learn new skills. This year’s selection of classes, led by local artists and library staff, offers a mix of options that promise to be fun and fulfilling. The classes are limited in size, so please register ahead of time by calling the library at 236-3440. Each class has a $10 fee to help cover costs.
Saturday, January 11, 1:00 to 3:00 pm: Envelope Pocket Portfolios. Local mixed-media fiber artist and writer Robinsunne will teach participants how to use everyday paper materials, like maps, to create beautiful and unique pocket portfolios.
Tuesday, January 14, 6:30 to 8:00 pm: Papercutting. Librarian Loraine will teach the basic skills used in the ancient art of papercutting. Using sharp blades and paper, participants can make some truly beautiful designs. Templates will be available for use, or participants can create their own.
Tuesday, January 28, 6:30 to 8:00 pm: Doodle Stitching and Embroidery. Librarian Amy will review the art of doodle stitching and embroidery and teach basic stitching techniques. Participants should bring a piece of clothing, a cloth purse, or any item made of thin fabric to embellish with embroidery. Needles, thread and embroidery hoops will be provided.
Thursday, January 30, 6:30 to 8:00 pm: Colonial Cooking for the Modern Kitchen. Library Programs Coordinator Julia will review popular Colonial New England recipes and teach participants how to adapt and recreate the recipes in a modern kitchen. Participants will make switchel, shrub, a homemade salad dressing, and journey cakes.
