Legal Maine Cannabis Businesses Need Access to Banking and Insurance

STATEHOUSE - Representative John Andrews (R-Paris) has introduced a Resolution urging the United States Congress to open up access to banking and insurance industry services to legal cannabis businesses in the United States. Currently, many of these businesses operate mostly in cash and without insurance due to Federal regulations. The Resolution seeks to fix that at the Federal level and will be introduced in the Maine House of Representatives on Tuesday, January 14. The proposal has broad bipartisan support, including many members of the state’s Veteran’s and Legal Affairs Committee.

“We’ve already seen the lack of access to banking and insurance, in particular, have a detrimental effect on several growing businesses and farms in Maine,” said Rep. Andrews. “I am really hoping that this Resolution is a catalyst to bring forward meaningful Federal legislation that respects state law and allows these businesses to operate with access to banking and insurance as any other legal business would.”

A copy of the Resolution urging Congress to open up access to banking and insurance for legal cannabis businesses will be sent to the President of the United States, the Speaker of the House of U.S. House of Representatives and to each member of the Maine Congressional delegation.  Representative John Andrews is serving his first term in the Maine legislature representing District 73, which is made up of the towns of Buckfield, Hebron and Paris.
