Camden/Rockport, Maine - Retired entomologist Bob Emmons will lead a presentation about the remarkable world of beetles at Merryspring Nature Center on Tuesday, January 28 at 12:00 pm.

It is estimated that 25% of all animal species on the planet are beetles. This proliferation has resulted in amazing diversity. They range in length from 1/100 of an inch to six inches. One species can lift 800 times its own weight, another mixes two chemicals to produce a toxic spray in a process similar to how rockets are propelled. The lightning beetle (firefly) produces light that is 90% efficient and another beetle species can sense a forest fire 80 miles away and flies into it to lay its eggs. These are just a few of the fascinating stories that Bob Emmons will relate in his presentation.

Bob Emmons taught at the State University of New York for 31 years. He has since retired to midcoast Maine.

This lecture is part of the Winter Talk series at Merryspring, sponsored by Allen Insurance and Financial. Admission to Tuesday talks is $5, with free admission for members of Merryspring.
