Strong First Quarter Lifts Buccaneers Over Mariners

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse fell to Massachusetts Maritime, 19-3 on Saturday in non-conference action at Clean Harbors Stadium.

How it Happened: The Buccaneers scored 10 goals in the first quarter, on their way to the 19-3 victory.

Inside the Numbers: Zeke Tocci (Naples, Maine) and Nathan Granholm (Brunswick, Maine) added man-up goals for the Mariners, while Bailey Stockford (Mt. Vernon, Maine) chipped in with a man-down goal in the third quarter.

William Evon (Barrington, Ill.) led the Mariners defensively with six ground balls and four caused turnovers. In net, Matthew Emery (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) collected nine saves in the first half and Verne Rice (Stratham, N.H.) tallied 10 saves in the second half in his collegiate debut.

Ted Powers led the Buccaneers with five goals and three assists, Benjamin Avakian added four goals and an assist and Alexandre Lucas added three goals and an assist.

Andrew Cook led Mass. Maritime with three caused turnovers and teammate Michael Sherry registered a game-high 10 ground balls. Michael Dolan earned the victory in net for the Buccaneers, stopping both shots he faced.

The Buccaneers held a 19-5 advantage in face offs and a 53-29 advantage in ground balls.

Up Next: The Mariners fall to 0-1 on the season and will return to action on Wednesday evening when they head to Saint Joseph's College of Maine for a non-conference matchup at 5:00 pm. Massachusetts Maritime improves to 1-1 overall.
