Baseball rolls past Salem State 11-0, edges Nichols College 5-4

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Bates baseball team won a pair of non-conference games on Saturday, defeating Salem State 11-0 and winning in walk-off fashion 5-4 over Nichols College at the New England Baseball Complex.

The Bobcats (3-4) are back in action Wednesday at Endicott. First pitch is set for 3:30pm.

Bates 11, Salem State 0

Junior captain Jack Arend went 4-4 at the plate and sophomore Christian Beal homered and drove in three runs to lead the Bates baseball team to an 11-0 win over Salem State Saturday morning.

Junior Nolan Collins (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) struck out six batters over six shutout innings to earn the victory. Collins (1-0) held the Vikings (0-1) to two hits in the win. Juniors Cameron Carlson (Tampa, Fla.) and Ryan Moralejo (Miami, Fla.) completed the four-hit shutout, with Carlson striking out one over two innings and Moralejo blanking the Vikings in the ninth.

First-year Andrew Chi (Closter, N.J.) drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the first against Viking starter Brock Riley (0-1). Arend (Newfields, N.H.) singled Chi to second and senior Dan Trulli (Melrose, Mass.) singled him home to put the Bobcats up 1-0.

They added to their lead in the fourth. First-year Bryan Gotti (Westwood, Mass.) singled to left to start the frame. Junior Pat Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) reached on an infield single and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Junior Giovanni Torres (North Haven, Conn.) singled in Gotti and junior Kyle Carter (Plantation, Fla.) bunted in Beaton, reaching base for a single in the process. Junior Jon Lindgren (Plainville, Conn.) bunted the runners over and Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) singled in Torres to extend the lead to 4-0.

Beal's single chased Riley from the game and Chi drew a walk from reliever Luke Brennan to load the bases. Arend followed with a single to center, scoring Carter and putting Bates up 5-0.

The Bobcats added to their lead to the sixth. Lindgren reached on an error to start the frame and Beal smacked his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to left field, increasing the Bobcat lead to 7-0.

Chi got hit by a pitch and Arend singled to center. Chi and Arend both advanced 90 feet on an error and Chi scored on a balk. One out later, sophomore Noah Loughlin (Mililani, Hawaii) doubled in Arend, making the score 9-0 in favor of the Bobcats.

Arend walked to start the bottom of the eighth. Trulli followed with a single and Loughlin drew a walk to load the bases. Junior Leo Watson (Indianapolis, Ind.) drove in a run on a fielder's choice and a passed ball scored another runner to make the score 11-0.

Bates tallied 15 hits in the win. Beal finished 3-4 at the plate with a home run and a walk. Arend reach base five times, scoring a run and driving in a run. Trulli went 2-5 at the plate and Torres finished 2-4 on the day. Traverse Briana paced the Vikings at the dish, going 2-3 with a walk. Salem State used six pitchers in the game.

Bates 5, Nichols 4

Loughlin drove in Torres with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth and the Bobcats prevailed 5-4 over Nichols College Saturday morning.

Senior captain Alex Simon (Windsor, Conn.) tossed an inning and a third of shutout ball out of the bullpen to pick up the win. With the score tied at four, Torres singled against Nichols reliever Brodie Altiere (0-2) to lead off the ninth. Lindgren bunted the ball down the first base line and collided with Altiere, the ball died on the grass and Torres advanced to third on the play. Loughlin followed with a line drive to left and Torres tagged up, racing to the plate and scoring the winning run.

Senior Justin Foley (Lynnfield, Mass.) got the start for Bates and tossed six innings of one-run ball. He allowed five hits and struck out four batters.

Bates scored four runs in the third inning off Nichols starter Jack Dicenso. Carter bunted his way aboard to start the frame. First-year Kevin Lucey (Topsfield, Mass.) singled to center and Beal singled as well to load the bases. Chi singled home Carter and Lucey to put Bates up 2-0. Arend singled in Beal and Trulli drove in Chi with a sacrifice fly.

Kyle Bouchard got the Bison (1-4) to within three runs with a solo home run in the fourth and the Bison rallied to tie the game with three runs in the eighth.

After first-year Jared Pantalony (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tossed a scoreless seventh, the Bison scored three runs (two earned) off sophomore Peter Schuldt (Winnetka, Ill.) on three hits and a walk. Simon (1-2) got the final out of the inning and shut down the Bison in the top of the ninth before Loughlin won it in the bottom of the ninth.
