BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Maine Maritime Academy women's lacrosse fell to SUNY Maritime, 16-3 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Clean Harbors Stadium in the second day of the Maritime Classic.
How it Happened: SUNY scored three goals in the opening minute to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Madison Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) put the Mariners on the board late in the first half, but the Privateers took a 10-1 lead into halftime.
The Privateers added four-straight goals to open up the second half, before Madison Savary (Bath, Maine) added her second goal of the season on an assist from Courtney Davidson (Harpswell, Maine) at 10:39. SUNY tallied three more goals late in the game to capture the win.
Inside the Numbers: Barry, Savary and Olivia Le Blanc (Conifer, Colo.) tallied the goals for the Mariners, Christina Wilson (East Granby, Conn.) led the team with three draw controls and goalie Sydney Cole (Westbrook, Maine) led the Mariners with three ground balls while making 14 saves in net.
Krista Deleva led the Privateers with seven goals, two assists, a ground ball and a caused turnover, Catherine Pfundstein added five goals, an assist, three ground balls, three draw controls, and a caused turnover and Sara Wright contributed three goals, three assists, nine draw controls, six ground balls, and two caused turnovers. In net, Esmeralda Hernandez tallied six saves to earn the victory for SUNY.
The Privateers held a 15-5 advantage in draw controls and a 28-15 advantage in ground balls.
Up Next: The Mariners fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Privateers improve to 1-1. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, March 23 when they host SUNY Canton for their North Atlantic Conference (NAC) and home opener at 2:30 pm at Ritchie Field.
