AMHERST, Mass. -- Izzy Scribano finished the day with 18 saves and the 19th-ranked Colby College women's lacrosse team opened the season with a big 6-5 win over sixth-ranked Amherst College in NESCAC play Saturday.
The Mules (1-0 overall, 1-0 NESCAC) will have their home opener Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. against University of New England. Colby will play its first NESCAC home game next Saturday at noon against Hamilton College.
"Our team worked hard all game and did a great job limiting high percentage shots," Colby head coach Karen Henning said. "Izzy had a presence in goal and consistently made saves when we needed her to."
By the numbers
* Scribano (pictured) made nine saves in each half, including a stop with just two seconds left in regulation. Amherst keeper Talia Land made six saves. Scribano also had five ground balls and one caused turnover.
* Taylor Moore led Colby with a pair of goals, including the lone score in the second half.
* Eliza Dean scored her first collegiate goal and the opening goal of the game for the Mules. Banks Dotson, Emma Banks, and Bridget Horwood also tallied for Colby.
* McGara DeWan had five draw controls, while Grace Langmuir added three draw controls and an assist. Kristin Yorke and Dotson both had two caused turnovers.
"McGara did a great job on the draw," Henning said. "She has tirelessly worked on the draw since last year when we played Amherst and that made a huge difference for us today."
Game highlights
* Colby led the game from start to finish after Dean scored from Kate Burkett just 3:02 into the game. Dotson tallied from Horwood with 22:14 remaining to make it 2-0.
* The teams traded goals over the next four scores. Emma Banks scored off a free-position shot and Moore tallied from Grace Crowell. Horwood made it 5-2 with 5:50 left to halftime from Langmuir.
* The Mammoths (0-1, 0-1) did score with 2:11 remaining to intermission to cut the margin to 5-3.
* Amherst cut the lead to 5-4 with 21:42 left in the contest, but Moore scored unassisted with 14:50 remaining for the Mules' final goal. The Mammoths cut the lead to 6-5 with 5:08 to play.
* The Mammoths took a 13-12 win over Colby at Bill Alfond Field a year ago. Amherst players Maia Noyes (3 goals, 4 assists) and Lindsey Call (4 goals, 1 assist) combined for seven goals and five assists for Amherst in the victory. The Mules held the two to just one assist this season.
