No. 21 women's lacrosse cruises to 15-3 win over Plymouth State

LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomores Kathryn Grennon and Summer Dias scored three goals apiece and the No. 21 nationally ranked Bates women's lacrosse team defeated Plymouth State 15-3 Monday afternoon in the Bobcats' home opener.

Bates (4-2) jumped out to a 7-0 lead over the Panthers (0-2) and never looked back. The Bobcats won the ground ball battle by a count of 23-12 and out-shot the Panthers 33-13. Five of the Bobcats' 15 goals came on free position opportunities. Senior captain Joanna Schafer (Meriden, N.H.) recorded a game-high seven ground balls on defense for Bates.

Sophomore Margaret Smith (Wilton, Conn.) got the scoring goal on a free position goal with 24:35 left in the first half. Dias (West Newton, Mass.) and Grennon (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) followed with back-to-back goals before senior Katie Allard (Ridgewood, N.J.) made the score 4-0 with 19:16 left in the half with her lone goal of the evening.

Senior Sydney Howard (Ashland, Mass.) scored a free position goal with 17:34 left and she followed that up with an unassisted tally with 12:27 remaining. Junior Avery MacMullen (New Haven, Conn.) capped the game-opening run with her second goal of the season.

With 6:15 left in the first half, Sydney Dubois got the Panthers on the board with a free position goal but Grennon answered with a minute to go on an assist from sophomore Elsbeth Caulo (Amherst, N.H.) to give the Bobcats an 8-1 halftime lead.

The teams traded goals to start the second half before the Bobcats went on a 6-0 run to put the game away. First-year Jordyn Tveter (Topsfield, Mass.) scored the first two goals of her collegiate career, much to the delight of the Bobcat bench.

Sophomore Rachael Deptula (Durham, N.H.) started between the pipes for Bates and made three saves in 30 minutes, earning the win. Senior captain Eliza Statile (Ipswich, Mass.) played the final 30 minutes, making four saves on the day. Meaghan Allard and Emilee Wargo split time in goal for the Panthers, with Allard making a game-high six saves.

The Bobcats take on NESCAC foe No. 9 nationally ranked Trinity Saturday at 12pm.
