Spartans Score Seven Goals in the Decisive Quarter
CASTLETON, Vt. -- Junior Jason Sedell (Pine Brook, N.J./DePaul Catholic) and senior Kevin McCarthy (Sayville, N.Y.) combined to score nine goals, including six in the third quarter, to lead the Castleton University Spartans to a 15-7 victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in non-conference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.
The win was the first of the season for the Spartans (1-4) after four losses.  The Huskies (1-5) dropped their fifth straight since their season-opening victory at Maine Maritime Academy.
Up 6-3 at halftime, the Spartans exploded in the third quarter for seven unanswered goals to blow the game open.  McCarthy ignited the outburst with a man-up goal at 13:20 off an assist from Sedell.  Sedell and McCarthy scored 23 seconds apart (12:32 and 12:09) to expand the Spartans' lead to 9-3 before the quarter was three minutes old.
Before the quarter came to a close, McCarthy, Sedell (two goals) and sophomore Tyler Crowningshield (Vergennes, Vt./Vergennes Union) would score to give the home side a 13-3 lead.
The Huskies outscored the Spartans 4-2 in the fourth quarter, but the deficit was just too large to make up.
In the opening quarter, the Spartans bolted to a 3-0 lead in the first six minutes on goals by senior Sam Siegel (Brattleboro, Vt.), junior Adnane Adossama (South Burlington, Vt.) and Sedell.
Senior Seth Wing (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) got USM on the board at 5:35, and the teams would trade goals for the remainder of the half to make it 6-3 at the intermission.
Wing led the Huskies with three goals.  Rookie Ethan Ouellette (West Newfield, Maine/Massabesic) had a goal and three assists.  Rookie faceoff specialist Derek Davidson (Hollis, N.H./Hollis-Brookline) won 10 of 19 faceoff and had six ground balls.  Freshman Robert Pini (Natick, Mass.) led all players with eight ground balls.  Senior goalie Zach Bessette (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) made nine saves in 56 minutes before giving way to rookie Griffin Hanson (Dover, N.H.) who made one save.
Sedell led all scorers with seven points on five goals and two assists, and McCarthy finished with four goals and two assists.  Crowningshield and sophomore Cameron Russell (St. Albans, Vt./BFA St. Albans) each had two goals and two assists.  Junior goalie Brandon Myron (Rensselaer, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) allowed five goals and made 13 saves in 51-plus minutes of action to earn his first win of the season.  Rookie Maxx Ingison (Manchester, Vt./Burr Burton Academy) played the final 8:46 giving up two goals and making one save.
Southern Maine opens Little East Conference play next Saturday (1 p.m.) when it hosts the University of Massachusetts Boston at Hannaford Field.  Castleton will host a non-conference game on Wednesday (4 p.m.) against SUNY Canton.
