GORHAM, Maine – For the third time in program history, the
University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's soccer team has been
recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)
with its annual College Team Academic Award. The Huskies have
previously earned the honor in 2010 and 2011.
To qualify for the award, Southern Maine must achieve have a minimum
grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) to be eligible. No stranger
to academic success, the Huskies' women's soccer program has been a
six-time recipient of the University of Southern Maine Athletic
Department's Remo C. Riciputi Award. The Riciputi Award is given
annually to the Huskies' team and individual sport with the highest
collective grade point average. The Huskies had 12 individuals earn
USM's William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete honors in 2014, including two of
the team's captains seniors CC Pelletier (West Newfield, Maine/Massabesic) and Marissa Temple (Grafton, Mass.).
Southern Maine is one of 554 women's soccer teams from across
Division I, II, III and NAIA schools recognized by the NSCAA for their
academic achievements. Southern Maine is one of five schools from the
State of Maine to earn the honors, including the University of Maine,
UMaine Farmington, Bowdoin and Thomas College.
The Huskies (3-5 overall) travel to Plymouth State on Saturday (2:30
p.m) for a Little East Conference game before returning home to face
in-state rival UMaine Farmington on Tuesday, October 6 (3:30 p.m.) for
their annual Faculty and Staff Appreciation Game.
