POULTNEY, Vt. – Husson University men's soccer team closed out its regular season campaign with an 8-0 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) win over Green Mountain on Sunday afternoon at Eagles Game Field.
Husson finishes the regular season with an 8-6-1 mark overall and a 5-4-0 conference record. Green Mountain slides to a 2-15-0 record with a 0-9-0 mark in conference play.
The hosts did their best to keep it a defensive battle through the first part of the opening half, but could not continue to thwart the attacking Husson offense.
Husson opened the scoring in the 18th minute after Green Mountain was called for a foul. Stephen Berenyi took the ensuing free kick and deposited it into the upper portion of the net from 25 yards out.
Phil Frost extended the lead to 2-0 in the 27th minute when he fired a shot from in close inside the near post after receiving a crossing pass from Josh Bean to convert on his 11th marker of the year.
Berenyi scored his second of the game and sixth of the season after receiving the ball deep in the Eagles' final third. The senior took a deft touch to deke the goalie and clear space for himself before converting on his shot.
Mike Curtis pushed the lead to 4-0 for the visitors in the 37th minute when he headed in a crossing pass from Bean to finish the first half scoring.
The visitors would continue to press in the second stanza adding four more goals. Curtis scored his second of the game and fourth of the year before Rod Ghanayem, Cam Libbey and Jimmy Fitzpatrick all notched a goal each.
Husson outshot the hosts 42-7 and held a 5-0 edge in corner kicks throughout the match.
Steven Paquette and Andrew Wicklund combined for the shutout for Husson each making one save. Samuel Nichols posted 11 stops en route to the loss for GMC.
Husson will await the final pairings for the NAC Championships to see who it will play in the opening round, while GMC will hang up its cleats for the year.
