POLAR BEAR PREVIEW
Bowdoin scuffled a bit in its first half against Williams as the Ephs
controlled the ball for over 22 minutes in the opening 30 and built a
14-0 lead. Bowdoin found its footing in the second half, actually
out-performing Williams in total yardage (219-191) and first downs
(12-9), but couldn't rally in an eventual 27-7 setback at Whittier
Field.
Tyler Grant,
the NESCAC's leading rusher a year ago, finished with 64 yards on the
ground for Bowdoin. In his first career start, quarterback Tim Drakeley went 21-39 for 248 yards (including 16-26 for 211 yards in the second half) and tossed his first career touchdown to sophomore Nick Vailas.
Vailas enjoyed a breakout game, exceeding his career totals with a
seven-catch, 93-yard game that also featured his first collegiate
touchdown catch. Defensively Nadim Elhage had seven tackles, including two for a loss, while punter Andrew Murowchick had a fantastic day that saw him average 40.4 yards per kick.
SCOUTING THE JEFFS
Amherst had little trouble dispatching Bates in Lewiston last weekend,
37-14. After allowing an 80-yard touchdown run to the Bobcats on their
first play from scrimmage, the Jeffs controlled the remainder of the
opening half, scoring 28 consecutive points. The Jeffs amassed 556 yards
of total offense, including an impressive 274 on the ground. Kenny
Adinkra had the bulk of chances, going for 104 yards on 20 carries.
Quarterback Reece Foy went 22-33 for 282 yards through the air. Amherst
was lethal on the third down, going 10-16 for the day.
LAST MEETING
Last year at Whittier Field, Amherst used a 21-point third quarter to
pull away for a 30-7 win over Bowdoin. The big play of the came with
Amherst leading 13-0 in the third quarter as quarterback Alex Berluti
found Jackson McGonagle for a 97-yard touchdown pass, the longest in
Amherst school history. Drakeley went 13-24 for 96 yards passing for
Bowdoin while Grant rushed 25 times for 86 yards. Daniel Barone had seven receptions for 61 yards.
BOWDOIN vs. AMHERST
The two long-time rivals have met continuously since 1945 and have
played in every non-war season since 1940. Despite Amherst holding a
73-18-2 edge in the all-time series the Polar Bears in recent years
have, more often than not, given the Jeffs all they could handle. In
2009, Bowdoin gave Amherst their biggest scare (a 13-12 decision) en
route to a perfect 8-0 season. In 2005, the Polar Bears snapped a
six-game losing skid to the Jeffs with a 16-13 win in Massachusetts. The
2004 showdown - a 34-28 Amherst win - was the first overtime game in
Whittier Field history.
