Eagles lose to Spartans, 4-1

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Husson women's soccer team lost 4-1 to Castleton in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

The win moves the Spartans to 10-7 overall, with a perfect 8-0 record in NAC play. Husson falls to 6-9-1 with the loss, including a 3-5 record in conference action.

Mallory Costello tallied six points in the game for the Spartans, scoring two goals and recording two
assists in the victory. Eva Clark and Bronwen Hopwood scored the other goals for Castleton, while Bri DiPhilippo recorded an assist.

The first half was all Castleton, with Clark opening the scoring on a pass from Costello in the fourth minute to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Costello doubled that lead in the 27th minute, driving a penalty kick into the bottom left corner of the goal to give her team a 2-0 advantage. Costello struck again in the 34th minute, taking a long lead pass from DiPhillipo and sliding it beyond the Eagles' keeper to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead going into the break.

The second half remained scoreless for more than 25 minutes, before Costello carried the ball up the right side to the end line and sending a cross into the box that was buried by Hopwood in front to extend the Spartan lead to four goals.

The Eagles got on the board in the 86th minute, when Taylor Fortin took a pass from Brooke Labelle and ripped a shot from 20 yards out over the fingertips of Castleton keeper Jessica Binkowski to give the game its final score of 4-1.

Binkowski stopped six shots in the victory, while Kayla Gordon made five saves for the Eagles. The Spartans controlled play for the majority of the game, outshooting the Eagles 20-10.

Husson is back on the pitch tomorrow when they travel to Green Mountain for their NAC final game of the regular season. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:0 p.m. The Spartans are back in action tomorrow when they host Maine Maritime in their final NAC game of the year. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
