BEVERLY, Mass. -- The Bates field hockey team got goals from Shannon Beaton and Caroline O'Reilly, then withstood a late Endicott goal to pick up a 2-1 non-conference victory Wednesday night at Endicott College.

Bates (5-3) won for the fifth time in six games. It is the Bobcats' second straight win, with both of them coming against opponents with winning records at the start of the game.

Endicott (7-6) faced a 2-0 deficit for 43 minutes of the 70-minute contest before cutting the deficit in half off the stick of Samantha Crowley with 7:29 left in the game.

Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) scored her team-high sixth goal in the first minute of the game, getting her shot to roll past Endicott goalie Rose Bradley for the 1-0 advantage. The goal was the captain's fifth in the past four games, and the 15th of her career.

Bates doubled its lead in the 20th minute, as O'Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.) found the back left of the goal from a wide angle to the right, her first goal this season. Sophomore midfielder Lauren Foster (Pawling, N.Y.) assisted on the goal for her first career point.

The Bobcats outshot the Gulls 11-9 and had 11 penalty corners to Endicott's five.

Senior captain Cristina Vega (Needham, Mass.) made two saves in earning her fourth victory of the season. Bradley made three saves for the Gulls.

Bates will play at Connecticut College on Saturday at noon.
