Texas Man Rescued From Appalachian Trail

Rangeley Plantation, Maine - A Texas man is recovering from a broken ankle suffered during a hike on Maine's Appalachian Trail (AT) near Mooselookmeguntic Lake late yesterday morning. Charles Smith, age 69, from Plano, Texas was hiking a section of the AT near the intersection of the Bemis Trail Track.

Maine game wardens responded just before noon yesterday and spent nearly four hours removing Smith from the AT that included very steep terrain. Fire and rescue personnel from the towns of Mexico, Rumford, and Byron and two members of Mahoosic Mountain Rescue Team assisted in the half-mile rescue operation. In total, three game wardens, one forest ranger, and 20 rescue personnel were involved. Smith was initially transported to Rumford Hospital but was then taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for treatment.
