“The Crisis of Modernity”

“The Crisis of Modernity” May 14

As part of its evening program series, the Camden Philosophical Society will host a talk by Richard Ogle, entitled “The Crisis of Modernity,” to take place in the Camden Public Library on Thursday, May 14, at 7:00 pm in the Picker Room. All are welcome.

Modernity, the post-Enlightenment era characterized by rational thought, market-based capitalism, and the rise of science and technology, has produced great prosperity but also intractable challenges: endless war, constant refugee crises, environmental destruction, economic stagnation, sectarian rejection of modernity, financial turmoil, political deadlock, and rising inequality. Einstein famously said, “The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.” Building on Einstein’s insight, this talk will explore ways in which philosophy can help us rethink modernity and the many issues with which it confronts us.

Richard Ogle is a founding member of the Camden Philosophical Society, and the author of Smart World: Breakthrough Creativity and the New Science of Ideas (Harvard Business School Press).
